What happens when you combine a hula-hoop challenge, a fruit blender, a treasure hunt across the schoolyard and 240 energetic children? You get a booming celebration of culture, teamwork, and identity.

Recently, the team from Key to the EU brought the European Union to life for 240 children at Crinkill National School. These pupils ranged from Junior Infants all the way to 6th Class. As a result, the schoolyard and classrooms buzzed with energy all day. The children took part in a full programme of creative, physical, and exploratory activities. Furthermore, every single station was inspired by the values, symbols, and stories of the EU.

Consequently, it proved that learning about active citizenship can be pure fun. Here is a look inside the seven interactive stations that made the day unforgettable.

Inside the 7 Festival Stations

1. Making the EU Flag: A Circle of Unity At this hands-on station, each child received a blue card and twelve sticky gold stars. Working side by side, the pupils then assembled their own EU flags together, with everyone focused on the same delicate challenge: arranging the twelve stars into a perfect circle in the centre of the blue card. Along the way, the children also learnt that the twelve stars do not represent the number of EU member states. Instead, the number twelve has long been a symbol of balance, harmony, and completeness. Therefore, every child left the station understanding that the flag is a statement of unity itself.

2. The Face Painting Station: Wearable Values Faces were transformed into living expressions of what Europe stands for. For example, children chose designs drawn straight from the heart of the EU. These included the golden circle of stars, the melody of Ode to Joy, and fundamental values like equality and solidarity.

3. Capital Skylines: The Art of Living Together Over at the arts and crafts station, children took a miniature trip across the continent. Specifically, pupils coloured their favourite European city skylines from Stockholm to Budapest. They brought them to life by cutting and gluing characters, animals, and objects onto the page. Therefore, the bustling scenes filled with different cultures mingling together reflected exactly what the EU does at its best.

4. The EU Smoothie Station: Tasting Unity Can you actually taste cooperation? To find out, children explored one of the most hands-on stops of the day. This station invited them to understand the EU through the act of blending. Ultimately, it served as a delicious, fitting metaphor for the union itself. It clearly showed how diverse ingredients can come together to create something much greater than the sum of their parts.

5. The Eurohoop Challenge: Learning to Collaborate to Make Decisions The Eurohoop station asked children to pass a hula hoop around a circle of joined hands without letting go. It sounds simple, but it turns out to be a lot like how the EU actually makes decisions. For this reason, children wore the flags of EU member states while being guided through the process. They learned that real collaboration takes patience, listening, and keeping every single country connected to protect everyone.

6. The Musical Dice Station: Quirky Continental Facts Outside, children passed and caught two foam dice while Ode to Joy played. When the music stopped, the number thrown unlocked a hidden card with a quirky EU fact. For instance, the pupils were delighted to learn that Slovenia has the word love hidden in its name. Similarly, they discovered that Denmark invented LEGO. On top of that, learning that shaking your head means "yes" in Bulgaria definitely made a few chuckle!

7. The EU Treasure Hunt: Discovery Across the Yard The day's most expansive activity stretched right across the schoolyard. Every class took part, from Junior Infants all the way to 6th Class, with the challenge carefully adapted for each age group. For example, the youngest pupils followed visual clues hidden among familiar corners of the yard, while older children worked their way through anything from fifteen to twenty questions depending on their class level. As a result, the whole space came alive with small teams running, searching, comparing notes, and shouting out new discoveries. The hunt turned the entire school grounds into a living map of Europe, where every clue uncovered was a small step toward understanding the Union a little better.

Looking Ahead: Bring This Festival to Your School!

Following the incredible buzz at Crinkill National School, the team at Key to the EU wants to take this experience on the road and bring this vibrant celebration straight to your schoolyard.

With the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU on the horizon, September is the perfect time to bring European citizenship to life in a fun, hands-on way. To mark the occasion, we are designing great resources and activities for the upcoming school year.

While we are still finalizing the details behind the scenes, the big picture is simple: we want to help you celebrate this milestone with your pupils, and one lucky school will win the ultimate prize—a fully organized Europe Day Festival brought straight to your schoolyard!

Active Citizenship Day took place on 2 December 2025 at UCC. The Hub in Active European Citizenship organised the event in partnership with the Electoral Commission. This first Active Citizenship Day brought together 96 primary pupils, 15 secondary students and 10 third-level students. Throughout the day, they took part in activities designed to promote democratic engagement and EU awareness.

First activity: A mock presidential election

The morning focused on a mock presidential election using the PRSTV voting system. Four third-level students and one secondary student stood as candidates. They represented the Irexit Party, the Housing Party, the Healthcare Party, the Student Needs Party and the Climate Change Party.

Pupils questioned the candidates before casting their votes at polling stations set up outside the room. The Electoral Commission then supervised a live vote count. This allowed pupils to observe each stage of the electoral process in real time.

Second activity: A Council of the EU simulation

In the second activity, pupils took part in a simulation of the Council of the EU. Groups of eight represented different EU countries. Each group received guidance about its country’s priorities. They then decided how to allocate EU funding across five policy areas.

The discussion focused on the Multiannual Financial Framework (M.F.F.) 2028–2034, which EU Member States are currently debating. Pupils engaged seriously with their roles. The debate became lively and constructive. In the end, the groups reached two compromise solutions on how to distribute the EU budget.

Third activity: An EU-themed treasure hunt across the UCC campus

Next, teams of six explored the UCC campus. Secondary and third-level students guided them through the treasure hunt. Each team searched for clues and answered questions about the European Union and the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The winter sunshine created a positive atmosphere. Pupils answered questions such as “How many stars are on the EU flag?” and “What does MFF stand for?”

Fourth activity: A disinformation workshop

The day concluded with an interactive disinformation workshop. Pupils examined articles and images from current affairs. They decided whether each item was true or false by raising a red or green card.

This activity sparked discussion about common myths about the EU. Pupils also identified three practical steps they can take to protect themselves against disinformation.

On 24 November 2026, in partnership with Cork City Council and the Communicating Europe Initiative, the Hub in Active European Citizenship welcomed more than 250 primary and post-primary students to UCC’s Devere Hall. The aim was simple. It was to host a vibrant and engaging EU quiz to raise awareness about Ireland's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. This Presidency will start on 1 July 2026 and will lasts 6 months. As a result, young learners from across Cork city and county came together. They celebrated European citizenship in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Above all, the day encouraged collaboration and curiosity.

Supporting EU Awareness

The Communicating Europe Initiative provided the funding. This national programme strengthens public awareness and understanding of the European Union. It also promotes informed debate about Ireland’s role in the EU. Because of this support, the Hub delivered two high-quality quiz sessions. One session was for primary students. The other was for post-primary students. Importantly, the questions were age-appropriate. They required no prior knowledge. Therefore, everyone could take part with confidence.

An Engaging and Inclusive Learning Experience

Dr Philip Murphy designed and delivered the quizzes. Each quiz included seven rounds of eight questions. The rounds explored the political, cultural, symbolic, and economic dimensions of the European Union. In addition, the content linked to topical EU themes, including Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. However, success did not depend on memorising facts. Instead, students relied on teamwork, observation, and problem-solving. As a result, the event was inclusive and accessible to all.

A Professional and Immersive Setting

The Hub selected UCC’s Devere Hall for its excellent AV and sound facilities. This ensured a smooth and professional experience. Meanwhile, student helpers decorated the venue in blue and yellow. Consequently, the space felt immersive and celebratory. Cllr Dan Boyle, deputising for the Lord Mayor, presented certificates, trophies, and spot prizes. He also shared insights from his work at European level through the European Committee of the Regions. Throughout the event, staff and students managed answer collection and scoring efficiently.

Building Momentum for the Future

Finally, catering was provided on-site. Professional photography captured the energy of the day. Most importantly, teachers praised the initiative. They also expressed strong support for making the EU quiz an annual event.

On 9 May 2025, the Hub in Active European Citizenship celebrated Europe Day in Kilmurry. Early that morning, the team brought energy and colour to both the local pre-school and primary school. Bright sunshine filled the sky. Because of this, everyone moved outdoors and used the full school grounds for the activities.

Discovering Europe at Pre-School

To begin the day, the team visited Kilmurry Pre-School. Through play and creativity, they introduced the European Union to the four-year-olds. The children worked in three small groups and rotated between activities.

In the first station, a student from the Hub guided an EU flag workshop. Each child received a blue card and yellow sticky stars. Together, they counted to twelve and carefully placed the stars in a circle. As they built the flag, they learnt about numbers, shapes, and teamwork.

Meanwhile, another group enjoyed EU-themed face painting. Blue and yellow stars quickly appeared on smiling faces. At the third station, children explored the yard during an EU treasure hunt. They searched for visual clue cards hidden around the playground. Since the clues used pictures, no reading was needed. Importantly, the Hub built on recent classroom learning about flags during the Six Nations Tournament and St Patrick’s Day.

Laughter echoed across the yard as the children ran and collaborated. At the same time, they deepened their understanding of colours and symbols. Gradually, they began to recognise the meaning of the twelve stars and the circle of unity. Many were surprised to discover that the EU flag appears on car registration plates — a symbol they see every day.

Engaging the Whole Primary School

Later in the morning, the team continued to Kilmurry National School. All 170 pupils, from Junior Infants to 6th Class, joined the celebration outside in the sunshine.

Although the Hub offered the same three core activities, they increased the level of challenge for older classes. Younger pupils focused on colours and symbols. In contrast, senior classes explored the values behind Europe Day, including unity, cooperation, and peace. They debated ideas, asked thoughtful questions, and made clear connections.

Colour, Creativity and Community

Throughout the afternoon, face painting remained a highlight. Across the yard, children proudly displayed blue and yellow designs. Staff members joined the fun as well.

By the end of the day, Europe Day felt lively and inclusive. Above all, it brought European citizenship to life for children aged four to twelve.

On 9 May 2019, we celebrated Europe Day with 100 primary school children at Kilmurry National School in County Cork. We organised an EU-themed quiz as part of My Big Friendly Guide to the European Union, now known as Key to the EU.

The event received national attention when RTÉ Radio 1’s Drivetime programme featured it. During the broadcast, reporter Noel Sweeney visited the school to explore how aware Irish children are of the European Union and Ireland’s role within it.

An EU quiz for primary school pupils

Dr Emmanuelle Schon-Quinlivan, European politics lecturer at University College Cork and co-creator of the programme, created and delivered the quiz. We designed the activity for 3rd and 4th class pupils. Our aim was to encourage children to think about what it means for Ireland to be part of the European Union.

Rather than promoting the EU, the quiz focused on reflection. In particular, it invited pupils to consider the advantages and disadvantages of being a member of a large club made up of many countries. The questions covered EU member states, the single market and the four freedoms of movement.

Learning through experience

To make Europe Day engaging and memorable, we included a blindfolded tasting round. During this activity, pupils tasted foods from across Europe, including Parma ham, feta cheese, croissant, soda bread and marmite. They then tried to identify both the food and its country of origin.

As a result, learning extended beyond the quiz questions. Throughout the activity, children shared what they had discovered. For example, they spoke about the single market, food standards and environmental protection within the EU.

Featured on RTÉ Radio 1

The Europe Day quiz formed part of a six-week teaching and learning programme. Dr Schon-Quinlivan developed this programme with a primary school teacher and piloted it in County Cork and Cork City over the previous two years.

RTÉ Radio 1 highlighted the initiative as one of the few activities in Ireland at the time dedicated to celebrating Europe Day with children. Finally, the day ended with spot prizes awarded throughout the quiz and a top prize for the winning team.

Today, this work continues under the name Key to the EU. We remain committed to helping young people develop a better understanding of the European Union through education, discussion and interactive learning.

On 10 May 2023, over 6,500 children from Ireland, France, Greece, Spain, Romania, Poland and partner countries Moldova and Armenia connected with European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova for European Values and Transparency. For 30 minutes, eight children between 8 and 18 years old asked the Vice President questions which matter to them.

It was a special moment which gave the children the opportunity to interact with a key policy-maker at European level. ay to celebrate Europe Day. After this conversation, the children played a giant interactive quiz organised by the Hub in Active European Citizenship to celebrate Europe Day.
