This is a really short video to outline how this class might be delivered. It is about giving a taste to the children about other EU countries than Ireland.
We have picked France and Italy. We have also included the resources for Germany but any country you find interesting would be fun.
In the teacher’s instruction pack which is quite large for 1st and 2nd class, we provide you with all the material you need. For this lesson, it includes 30 pages for France and Italy, covering the country’s geography, climate, flag, currency, famous landmarks, famous people, typical food, etc.
The way this lesson is delivered requires an SNA who will take one of the groups while you look after the other one. You divide your class in two groups and you distribute to each child in each group a fact on their country.
Each group will spend time going over their facts and rehearsing how to present them. The ‘France’ group prepares separately from the ‘Italy’ group. After rehearsing, the aim is to get each group to line up at the front of the class and present to each other.
Each pupil from the ‘France’ group shows their fact and says it out loud. The same then happens for the ‘Italy’ group. It gets pupils to practice their observation and oral skills, demonstrate respect when it comes to listening to each other and implement collaboration as they need to work together to present their country. They learn different things about two EU countries.
As mentioned before, you can lean into who sits in your class and decide on other countries like the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania or Romania. It can get pupils to open up about some home traditions and share happily.
