On 24 November 2026, in partnership with Cork City Council and the Communicating Europe Initiative, the Hub in Active European Citizenship welcomed more than 250 primary and post-primary students to UCC’s Devere Hall. The aim was simple. It was to host a vibrant and engaging EU quiz to raise awareness about Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. This Presidency will start on 1 July 2026 and will lasts 6 months. As a result, young learners from across Cork city and county came together. They celebrated European citizenship in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Above all, the day encouraged collaboration and curiosity.
Supporting EU Awareness
The Communicating Europe Initiative provided the funding. This national programme strengthens public awareness and understanding of the European Union. It also promotes informed debate about Ireland’s role in the EU. Because of this support, the Hub delivered two high-quality quiz sessions. One session was for primary students. The other was for post-primary students. Importantly, the questions were age-appropriate. They required no prior knowledge. Therefore, everyone could take part with confidence.
An Engaging and Inclusive Learning Experience
Dr Philip Murphy designed and delivered the quizzes. Each quiz included seven rounds of eight questions. The rounds explored the political, cultural, symbolic, and economic dimensions of the European Union. In addition, the content linked to topical EU themes, including Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU. However, success did not depend on memorising facts. Instead, students relied on teamwork, observation, and problem-solving. As a result, the event was inclusive and accessible to all.
A Professional and Immersive Setting
The Hub selected UCC’s Devere Hall for its excellent AV and sound facilities. This ensured a smooth and professional experience. Meanwhile, student helpers decorated the venue in blue and yellow. Consequently, the space felt immersive and celebratory. Cllr Dan Boyle, deputising for the Lord Mayor, presented certificates, trophies, and spot prizes. He also shared insights from his work at European level through the European Committee of the Regions. Throughout the event, staff and students managed answer collection and scoring efficiently.
Building Momentum for the Future
Finally, catering was provided on-site. Professional photography captured the energy of the day. Most importantly, teachers praised the initiative. They also expressed strong support for making the EU quiz an annual event.
